What we’re about
This is a group for all those who are interested in the practice of AcroYoga. Acro Yoga is a partner practice that combines Yoga, Acrobatics, and Thai Massage. The most important aspect of it in my opinion is community. Every week there are Acro Jams.
Acro Jams are like playgrounds for adults! All are welcome, whether you are a complete beginner, or have been practicing for years. Everyone is friendly and is willing to show you anything you want to learn. Come check one out. No need to bring a partner, we're all here to play and have fun!
Now, if you are still on the fence, let me tell you a little bit about myself. This is a long story, so be sure to read to the end. I really hope it inspires you to take that first step.
================================================
3 years ago, I had never done any kind of acrobatic or acroyoga practice before. I had lost some weight thanks to some simple home workout videos, and a lot of DDR but I never considered myself an "active" person.
When it came to an acrobatic practice, I had only seen cool pictures, all of which looked amazing, but nothing I thought I would ever do myself. Just something cool that those who've practiced gymnastics their entire lives would ever even attempt to do. This was my thinking.
That all changed after attending my first Acro Jam.
I had a friend who had been telling me about it for months, but I always turned him down with the same objections. OMG, someone is going to lift me up? I don't want to break anyone, what if I fall? I'm going to be putting my hands and feet on other humans? Are you sure this is a good idea? I don't even have a partner, this all just seems so strange.
Believe me, I've been there.
But one day I finally said, forget it, I just HAVE to take a chance and see what this is all about. So there I go, to my first jam. And at first, everyone around is doing all these crazy things, I'm basically just staring in awe at everyone around me, I'm even more intimidated than before.
That is, until someone came up to me and said, Hey, do you want to fly?
I was really nervous, wasn't sure what to do, I said sure, and gave it a shot. That person put me in my first bird, showed me a few pointers, and the feeling I had was unlike anything I had ever experienced before. In acro, you really learn how to connect and trust in your partners, and your spotters. In order to truly express the different poses, there's a sense of letting go that you experience, that I can't even begin to put into words.
Needless to say, I was hooked. I had to do more, I had to learn all I could. So I started attending local classes, learning all that I could.
For months, I couldn't even base bird, let alone a shoulder stand, people would always tip over, and thus I learned to love my spotters. I learned to approach other people in the community for help. I learned to ask others how to do different things. I learned that when I saw something cool, I could ask people how they did it, and they would share and give support. The community lifted me up, and without them, I wouldn't be able to do all the things I do today.
Now I'm practicing hand2hands with all those who've begun a handstand practice. I show newbies how to flow into any position. I give therapeutics and flying massages to all those who seek them. And I now have my own press handstand to go into different asanas with ease.
Now, having been practicing Acroyoga for over 3 years. I'm ready to give back. I'm ready to show you how you can achieve any pose or flow you set your mind to with just a little bit of training & technique. You don't need to be intimidated by the beauty around you, you can BECOME the beauty that you seek, and when you do, your life will be filled with a wonder that I'm only beginning to get at with the few words I've shared with you here.
Take a chance, check out a jam, and be amazed at the wonder all-around AND within you. You can achieve anything! Welcome to AcroYoga!
