What we’re about
Adventurous Young Mazamas (AYM) offers outdoor activities year-round targeted to younger adults in their 20s & 30s and anyone who is young at heart. All activities are open EVERYONE eighteen and over who can safely participate in our events.
MANY OF OUR EVENTS ARE ONLY POSTED TO OUR WEBSITE https://mazamas.org/AYM/
We're part of the Mazamas, a 501(c)(3) mountaineering nonprofit based in Portland. Events are sometimes posted to our facebook. You can find a complete list of upcoming activities at http://mazamas.org/AYM. We offer adventures including camping, backpacking, cycling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and social events that relate to the outdoors.
No firearms, alcohol, smoking, vaping, or drugs are allowed on the trail at our events. Unless the leader of an event has specifically designated the event as a pet-friendly one, we do not allow pets.
We do charge small fees for most of our events. Fees go toward direct event costs and the services Mazamas provides including insurance, Meetup fees, facilities and support for events and leader training, and emergency assistance. We generally carpool to most outdoor events and expect passengers to contribute to the cost of transportation and any parking passes. Standard Mazamas rate is 10 cents/person/mile though contributions are at the discretion of drivers. HOWEVER, due to COVID-19, we are asking all participants to meet at the trailhead until further notice. Please see the Mazama COVID Policies for more information.
Leaders are volunteers and do not receive any portion of event fees. All AYM leaders have first aid and CPR training and have been vetted by our committee for their skills and experience. Participants must follow the instructions of leaders in order to protect group safety. Leaders reserve the right to exclude participants who are not adequately prepared or behave in ways that cause others discomfort or danger. We are always looking for new leaders! The first step to becoming one is to attend our events and talk to your leader about it.
Please treat other participants with respect and consideration. Many of our events have more people wishing to participate than we can accommodate. Please only RSVP yes if you are committed to attending. If you say you are coming and do not, or cancel at the last minute, you may be preventing others from participating. Participants who demonstrate a history of no-shows or last-minute cancellations without good cause may be removed from the group.
Meetup provides a platform for strangers to become friends through shared interests and activities. Part of building trust and friendship starts with using an identifiable profile picture of yourself so people know who you are and we can find each other, especially when meeting the first time. Leaders may choose not to allow participation by people who do not have a clearly identifiable picture.
This is a group to meet friends for outdoor adventures, not a dating site. Anyone who sends inappropriate messages or causes others to feel uncomfortable or unsafe may be removed from the group.
On social media, please follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Flickr where you can also see many pictures from our events.
Becoming an official Mazamas member is different from being a member of our Meetup group. To become a Mazamas member you must summit a qualifying glaciated peak and pay an annual membership fee. Mazamas member benefits include discounts on event fees, discounts at many Portland-area outdoor retailers, and subscription to the Mazama Bulletin published monthly.

Note, this is provisional hike for future hike leader Jane Hammaker.
Come out for a winter hike! Depending on the weather, we'll consider two route options. Plan A is Saddle Mountain, but due to relatively high elevation and exposure, there's a chance that conditions will be icy and unsafe for a large group. The backup plan is hiking Ecola State Park, which is at a lower elevation and should be safe (albeit, wet and muddy!) regardless of conditions. Leaders will monitor weather and finalize our hike plan by 2pm December 7th.
If folks are interested in carpooling, we’ll plan to meet at Sunset Transit Center to arrange rides at 7:30AM Dec 8th for either hike.
Plan A: Saddle Mountain. 1,900 elevation gain, 5.2 miles out-and-back [map]
- If we're lucky -- views of the ocean and the Cascades. It will be muddy and possibly icy, so bring micro spikes if you have them. Expect to turn around if leaders determine conditions are too sketchy to continue.
- No parking fee; Vault toilets at trailhead. No drinking water.
- Possibly stop for food in Cannon Beach on the way home.
Plan B: Ecola State Park - Indian Beach to Tillamook Head. 1,350 elevation, 8ish miles out-and-back [map]
- Beautiful, muddy trail with amazing ocean views.
- Ecola State Park charges a $5 fee for parking (Oregon State Parks pass will work) ; Vault toilets at trailhead. No drinking water.
- Possibly stop for food (Public Coast?) on way home.
Gear list:
- 10 essentials
- Micro spikes for Plan A
- Your best rain gear
- Snacks, water and lunch @ the summit or beach

- Pub & Grub Night: Peacock Lane Lights EditionMazama Mountaineering Center, Portland, OR
Every month we get together to celebrate new and old friends and our collective love of the outdoors.
This month we'll offer a pre-drink walk to enjoy the holidays with a stroll down Peacock Lane to enjoy the lights before heading to the nearby Horse Brass Pub.
We'll meet in front of Mazamas Mountaineering Center (where you can park cars and bikes) at 6:30pm, stroll down Peacock Lane (https://www.peacocklane.org/), and plan to arrive at Horse Brass at approximately 7:15 pm for those joining later. Walk is approximately 10 blocks.
Peacock Lane bills itself as "Portland's Christmas Street" and is a designated National Historic Place.
Feel free to register on Mazama website: https://mazamas.org/activity/instance/12884/
- AYM: White River Canyon Snowshoe (dog friendly)Needs location
SIGNING UP ON MEETUP DOES NOT GUARANTEE A SPOT. YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER ON THE MAZAMAS WEBSITE:
https://mazamas.org/activity/instance/12883/Join us for a dog friendly snowshoe around White River Canyon! Plan is to do the Boy Scout Ridge Trail which is about 5 miles with 1800ft of gain. Depending on how the group is feeling, we may do some extra exploring!
More trail info can be found here: https://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide/Boy_Scout_Ridge_Snowshoe_Hike
For those interested, we'll likely hit up a brewery in nearby Govvy, Parkdale, or Hood River on the way back for foodies and bevvies.
Pupticipants are welcome, but out of respect to other hikers we are limiting the number of doggos to 5. Please indicate when you register if you plan to bring your pup by emailing [email protected]. All pup-ticipants must be well behaved and get along with other puppers. Any participant who attempts to bring a dog who does not indicate to us by email that they will be bringing a dog will not be permitted on the hike.
