Appalachian Mountain Club Delaware Valley Chapter

Join me for some enjoyable exercise: a fast-paced hike on Mt. Misery and Mt. Joy in Valley Forge National Historical Park. I will aim for 5-7 miles at an average speed of 3.4+ mph (a bit slower in up-hill and rough sections, but faster in easier sections), with elevation gain around 800 – 1,300 feet. The intent is to offer fast hikers an aerobic workout.

Meet in the Artillery Park parking lot, at the end near the restrooms. Note: GPS maps commonly lead you the long way around Inner Line Drive because they mistakenly show all of it as a one-way road. The shorter way: heading SE on Gulph Road, turn right at E Inner Line Drive (not S Innerline Drive). It is a two-way road from that intersection to the parking lot.

Bring water, clothing appropriate for the weather (layers work well), sturdy footwear (hiking shoes or boots work well), and a smile.

I’m not planning any restroom stops, but there are restrooms at the parking lot where we start and end.

Dogs are not permitted on this hike.

AMC is a non-profit organization and the hike leaders are volunteers. All participants will need to sign the AMC liability release agreement just prior to the hike (you can review it in advance at https://www.outdoors.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Volunteer-Led-Activity-Release-21.pdf). Children under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, who will need to sign the agreement for them.

Come join this nine mile loop hike through this scenic pine barrens environment. After visiting the newly renovated visitor center, we will do a complete loop around this over 900 acre track passing through a variety of habitats including bogs, streams, swamps and upland forest. Some of the terrain has small hills. Bring water, lunch and snacks. Rain cancels. Register by contacting the leader. Group size limited.

Explore the Sandy Hook, NJ portion of Gateway National Recreation Area on this 6 mile loop hike. We will hike through maritime forest, ocean and bay beaches, and paved multi-use path hopefully seeing some wildlife and a few historic locations. Often there are wintering seals this time of year. After the 6-mile formal portion of the hike the group will have the option of doing a walking tour of Fort Hancock (1 to 5 miles depending on the group) or hike other park locations. Meet at the NE corner of Parking Lot D (not at the bathrooms) at Sandy Hook at 11 AM. Bring Lunch and Water. Bad driving conditions cancels.
