Two important things for this trip:
- No jeans - if you turn up wearing jeans you won't be allowed to join the group
- Please make sure all your clothes and gear are clean. We will use the spray stations before and after entering the tracks in accordance with the CAN (Controlled Area Notice for Kauri Dieback)
Starting from the Wairoa Dam carpark we will walk the recently opened Wairoa Cossey track in one direction before finishing at the Hunua Falls.
Medium level of difficulty, won’t bother regular hikers. There are some steep sections and quite a lot of steps.
Walking Time: approx 4.5-5hrs including breaks.
Distance: approx. 13km
Graded 3 on 1-5 group difficulty rating
Led by Helen KF. (mob 021 0282 3600) and Mike F. (mob 027 431 9054)
Here’s the plan:
Before 8.45am – Meet Wairoa Loop Track carpark. There are toilets here for us to use.
8.45-9.15am - As this hike is in one direction only we need to do a short car shuttle and leave some cars at the end for drivers. This will be organised on the day. Please be prepared to volunteer and help with the car shuttle.
9.15am – Start hiking
12pm - Lunch somewhere along the track
2.15pm - Approx finish time
Bring - Normal hiking gear - and have warm base layers like merino or thermal clothes on or in your pack in case of bad weather, a raincoat, strong footwear with great grip. A hiking pole is also useful for some of the steeper sections.
Food - Bring lunch and snacks plus plenty of water for yourself (min 2l)
Suggest carpooling. Please comment when you rsvp whether you need a lift / can offer lifts, which part of Auckland and your mobile number. It’s up to you to arrange this among yourselves. Please give your driver $20 for petrol money (either cash on the day or bank transfer).
Meeting location is the Wairoa Loop Track carpark on Otau Road. Put 164A Moumoukai Road, Hunua into your GPS and take the left turnoff onto Otau Road.
End location for car shuttle purposes is end of the carpark at the end of Falls Road, Hunua.
It will take approx 30mins to drop cars off and drivers return to the start.
*Please note it is VERY important that you all arrive on time so we can confirm how many cars/drivers we have. If you arrive after we have organised the car shuttle there may not be space in the cars for you to get back to the start.
Donation - Due to increased Meetup subscription costs we ask all members to contribute $2 for this hike. You can either bring a gold coin on the day or make the donation direct to our dedicated bank account:
Helen Kerslake-Forbes 06-0998-0909890-03
Any donation money remaining after our 6 monthly subscription is paid will go towards safety gear for the group.
No guests. If you have friends or family who want to join get them to sign-up to Meetup and RSVP.
Be sure to read all the details before you RSVP. If you can no longer attend please update your RSVP immediately to allow others to join. If you pull out at the last minute or don't show up this will be counted as a 'no show'. 3 no shows will trigger a 6 month ban from the group.
We look forward to sharing this walk with you all!
