What we’re about
This group is for those interested in monthly guided hikes, facilitated and led by Virginia Outdoors Foundation Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve staff, that focus on different aspects of a Natural Area Preserve and the native plants and animals it protects.
Each hike has a different trail and theme, and are dedicated to fostering the discovery of the natural ecosystems in the preserve. Topics range from education about those ecosystems and the management strategies in place to protect them, to naturalist hikes that are more for observation or hikes geared towards plant and animal identification or cultural history exploration.
Each hike is informal, with a larger focus on building the community of Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve and giving our hikers a broader view of the preserve and the work that goes in to managing these beautiful habitats. All skill levels and enthusiasts are welcome! Come out and explore the preserve with Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve staff!

Want to be a part of improving our trails?
Join VOF preserve staff and fellow volunteers for a bridge repair day along our Fern Hollow Trail, this December.
The 20' bridge needs all new tread boards & wooden stringers and we need help carrying in all of the material.
Volunteers are needed to hike in the wooden planks (about a mile from the trail head)
No experience is necessary. VOF has all the tools and lumber necessary for assembling the bridge itself.Meet at the Trailhead at the end of Beverly Mill Drive at 9:00 AM, Saturday, December 7th
This (like most of our volunteer work) is highly physical activity that is geared towards improving the publicly-accessible trails at Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve.
All tools and materials are provided by Virginia Outdoors Foundation
Please bring leather work gloves and be on time.We strongly encourage wearing field-appropriate clothing for trail work: long pants/field pants, work gloves, long sleeves, a hat and sunscreen. Bring plenty of water and any snacks if you desire them. Our workdays generally last from 3 to 4 hours but are flexible.
All volunteer days are subject to weather - should there be an excess of high-winds and storms, we will cancel! If you have any questions about the workday please contact
