Halyburton Park’s 60 acres of longleaf pine forest is an important landscape within the city and the Cape Fear Arch region for wildlife and park visitors. The natural communities of the park, its significance as a natural heritage site, and the best management practices will be explored during the presentation. A focus on longleaf pine ecology, management and restoration work will be emphasized.

Andy Fairbanks is an environmental educator and supervisor at Halyburton Park. His passion is exploring southeastern North Carolina while sharing his knowledge of the local flora and fauna and inspiring individuals to develop an appreciation for the environment. He has been connecting people with nature since 1997 through environmental education and outdoor adventure programming. His primary interest are birds,reptiles and amphibians, dragonflies, longleaf pine and barrier island ecosystems. He holds a B.A. in Parks and Recreation Management from UNC-Wilmington, is a certified Environmental Educator with the North Carolina Office of Environmental Education, is a Project WILD Facilitator,and previously served on
the board for Cape Fear Audubon Society and Ft. Fisher State Recreation Area Advisory Committee. He is
currently on the City of Wilmington’s Equity and Inclusion Roadmap Team.
