- 'The Roman Wall - then & now' Guided WalkTower Hill Tube Station (outside the station), London
Come along on Sunday 30th November at 1:30pm for a guided walk along the old Roman Wall!
About the walk
We will be walking the route of the old Roman Wall, starting at Tower Hill Tube and finishing at Blackfriars Tube.The wall was built between 190AD and 225AD and defined the shape of the City of London. As the City expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries a lot of the wall was knocked down, although there is a bit left which we can see.
We will be following the wall using a 'Braun & Hogenberg' map which was drawn in 1572, it shows the wall intact and was one of the first maps to be drawn of London. Using the map, we will be able to see not only what the Roman's built, but also how the wall was adapted and what was built around it in the 16th century when the map was drawn. We can then compare this by what exists on and around the wall today, some 1800 years after it was built.
The walk will be led by myself. Maps will be provided of the route. We will walk about 2 miles and so it will take about 2 hours.

Come along on Sunday 1st December to visit the Ragged School Museum!
About the museum
Dr Barnado's Copperfield Road Ragged School opened in 1877 to serve the children of Mile End with a basic education and was the largest of its kind at the time.The building was saved from demolition in the 1980s by local residents and a trust was set up to manage the property in 1990. The museum opened in the premises in the same year. The museum seeks to record the establishment in 1844 of the London Ragged School Union and to recreate the experience of how Victorian children would have been taught.
The museum features a reconstructed Victorian classroom and when we arrive, we will be having a 'Victorian school lesson' from our teacher 'Miss Perkins', so you can experience what it would have been like. The classroom is equipped with authentic and well-used school desks, slate writing boards and chalks, blackboards, easels and even dunce hats (exactly how it would have been in Victorian times).
Afterwards, we will look around the museum, where the galleries tell the social history of the East End of London in Victorian times.
The visit should last about 1h 30mins/2 hours. After the lesson which we will have when we arrive, the museum will be self guiding.

About the day
Birmingham is the UK's second city which grew out of the industrial revolution. It sits on the River Tame, but does have numerous canals. It sits 100 miles north west of London.Its name comes from the Old English 'Beormingahām' meaning the home or settlement of the Beormingas – a tribe or clan whose name means 'Beorma's people'.
Birmingham’s German & Austrian Christmas Market is the largest market outside of Germany/Austria itself. The stalls are situated on Victoria Square and along New Street and it's known for its food and crafts.
Birmingham is a vibrant shopping destination, with the Bullring being the main shopping centre to visit.

About the foreshore
I will be your guide as we will be going down to the Thames foreshore at low tide, where we will have about 1h 30mins to have a look around for objects before the tide comes in.I will tell you more about foreshore, the industry in the area and will be on hand to identify and date objects you find. Most objects you can spot sitting on the foreshore after being washed in on the tide (we are not allowed to dig or scrape the foreshore surface).
You will find everything from bits of pottery, clay pipes, bottles, animal bones to ship items. Most of the things we find are from the Medieval to the Victorian period or you might be lucky and find something Roman or older.
The foreshore is very stoney and sometimes muddy, so please wear sensible shoes (preferably walking boots/shoes or wellington boots). Plastic gloves and bags will be provided.

About the walk
Now that the London overground “ginger line” has arrived at Denmark Hill this area is much more accessible from other parts of town so come and explore this little known district of London.Attractive Georgian houses, green spaces, remnants of a workhouse, an historic parish church, educational and medical establishments all feature. Learn about the area’s connection with the founder of the Salvation Army, the leading Victorian art critic, a famous 18th century writer and the only living British actress to be awarded a blue plaque.
We finish at the South London Art Gallery where we find an excellent cafe and, depending on the tour timing, interesting exhibitions of contemporary art.
The walk is a private walk for the group, we will be guided by Blue Badge guides Diane Burstein & Rachel Kolsky.
Denmark Hill is in Zone 2 and is on the Thameslink Line. You can get there from Victoria or London Bridge.

About the museum
Housed in a warehouse built in 1802 to store sugar, coffee and rum, the museum tells the story of the Thames, its port and the people from all over the world who settled there.Thousands of objects and pictures – many rescued during the 1970s and 1980s when containerisation and competition forced London's port to move downstream – trace the area's history, from the arrival of the Romans to the rise of Canary Wharf. Historic photographs and printed material from the Port of London Authority Archive show the vast scale of the docks at the turn of the twentieth century and workshop reconstructions illustrate the many traditional port trades, now mostly lost.
Metropolitan Fire Brigade footage and captured Nazi footage documents the impact of the Blitz on the area and oral testimonies explore the port's role in secret wartime projects.

Come along on Wednesday 18th December for a Dickensian Carol Service at St. Bartholomew the Great Church!
The normal carol concert we attend at St. Stephen Walbrook church is not happening this year, as the church is closed until next April for restoration.
About the service
Many of the images we are familiar with in our Christmases today come to us from the Victorian era, and are associated with the works of Charles Dickens, and especially his book, A Christmas Carol.This service uses readings from that magnificent work, as well as other writings by Dickens relating to the season. Meantime, the music for both choir and congregation is taken from the sources that were available in his lifetime, so that we both hear his words and sing the carols that he would have known.
A special feature of this service is that some of the descendants of Charles Dickens will be giving some of the readings. Plus the choir will be dressed in Dickensian clothes.
About the church
The church was founded in 1123 by a monk called 'Rahere' and was part of the Augustinian priory next door. The chuch sits behind a Tudor gatehouse from around 1595. The chuch has unusual architecture, starting in a Norman Romanesque style of architecture, however during the build, the Gothic style was becoming the go-to design, so it changed halfway through the build.The church has been featured in many films, including: 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' (1994), 'Elizabeth: the Golden Age' (2007), 'The Other Boleyn Girl' (2008) and 'Testament of Youth' (2014).
Doors open at 5:30pm and the concert will last about 1 hour.
