Claire Schon will talk about her current research with invasive Phragmites australis biological control. In 2005, invasive Phragmites was called Canadas “worst invasive plant” and is still threatening wetlands in Canada today. Claire’s research with collaborators at University of Toronto and Agriculture and Agrifood Canada, focuses on the efficacy of a new technique for invasive Phragmites control and monitoring the recovery of native plant communities. Learn more about the two moth species that feed on invasive Phragmites and the promising results for Phragmites biological control she has found so far.
Claire Schon is a PhD Candidate in the Waterloo Wetland Laboratory, led by Dr. Rebecca Rooney at the University of Waterloo in the Department of Biology. Her research focuses on botany, wetland ecology, and invasive species control, working to control invasive Phragmites within southern Ontario

Please join Nature Guelph on Feb 13, 2025 at 7:30 pm for a presentation by Sarah Richer about Fresh Water mussels. Everyone is welcome!
Who among us poops out cleaner water than they take in? If they had hands, freshwater mussels would raise them proudly! Our freshwater mussels may not move very much in their lives, but they are a crucial part of aquatic ecosystems – not only as food for other animals, but each can also filter several dozen litres of water a day! Over 39% of Ontario’s freshwater mussel species are species at risk due to habitat loss, pollution, competition from invasive species, and loss of their host-fish species. Sarah will discuss what species you might find, which features are useful for identifying them, the creative way they reproduce, and where to report your sightings.
Sarah Richer joined the Royal Botanical Gardens team in January 2016 as the Species at Risk Biologist in the Natural Lands department. Prior to landing at RBG, the variable nature of the environmental industry allowed her the privilege of working in conservation, stewardship, research, and natural heritage education for many organizations, including but not limited to Parks Canada, Ontario Parks, Canadian Wildlife Service, Ducks Unlimited Canada, Wye Marsh, and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. She has also clocked many volunteer months with wildlife rehabilitators, captive breeding projects, bird banding stations, and wildlife research. She primarily focuses on both common and species at risk birds, reptiles, amphibians, and plants, with some insects thrown in for good measure.

Please join Nature Guelph on April 10, 2025 at 7:30 pm for a presentation by Aleksandra Dolezal about the activities and research monitoring at rare Charitable Research Reserve. Everyone is welcome!
rare Charitable Research Reserve is an urban land trust and environmental institute dedicated to protecting over 1,200 acres of environmentally sensitive land across Waterloo Region and Wellington County. Aleksandra will provide a brief history of rare and speak about the long-term monitoring programs that have occurred on the property since 2006. Monitoring of butterflies, salamanders, forest health, soils, lichen, and benthic invertebrates helps inform land use changes, stewardship and education programs on the property. Fun fact: rare Charitable Research Reserve is the largest non-governmental-owned urban green space in Canada!
Aleksandra holds the role of Conservation Scientist- Research Priorities, Partnerships & Monitoring at rare Charitable Research Reserve. She is an ecologist with experience in habitat restoration, environmental analysis, insect taxonomy and genomics. She received her Honour's Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Toronto in Life Sciences, with a specialist in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and a minor in Environmental Biology. She received her Master's in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of Guelph and is currently completing a Doctoral degree at the University of Guelph.
