What we’re about
The Sierra Club is the largest and oldest environmental organization in the United States. The Eastern Missouri Group both conducts outings to explore and enjoy the outdoors and we work to ensure a clean and healthy environment and a livable climate for all people. This group is open to anyone who shares these interests and goals. Our outings include day hikes, camping, biking, canoe or kayak excursions, trail maintenance, and stream cleanups including Operation Clean Stream. Our ICO (Inspiring Connection Outdoors) program gives underserved populations the opportunity to get out into nature, learn new skills, and have fun in a safe setting with experienced adult mentors.
We have monthly evening programs at our office in Maplewood which typically have a speaker on some environmental topic and gives members the chance to meet and interact with other Sierrans. The topics range from snakes to stars, from wildlife to wildflowers. There are also announcements of upcoming events, including the chance to squeeze lemons and sell lemonade at our fun lemonade fundraising events.
On our outings, we request a donation of $1.00 per person to help support our programs. Firearms are not allowed on outings. Pets are not allowed on outings unless announcement specifically states that the outing is pet friendly. All Participants must sign a liability release. Our Outing Leaders are trained volunteers with First Aid training. Outings officially start at the trailhead or river access. Carpooling is encouraged but not the responsibility of the Leader. For more general information please contact Jim Rhodes at [email protected]. All are encouraged to check for recent outing additions on our EMG website, http://www.sierraclub.org/missouri/eastern-missouri.
