Moderate 6 miles RT Saturday hike 8:45am

This beautiful wildlife and birding area rivals Madera Canyon and Santa Rita Lodge with hummingbirds, turkeys, ringtail cats, deer and hundreds of bird species! Named after St. Louis prospector Henry Hamburg who developed a mining camp at the head of Ramsey Canyon, this is one of the most scenic and diverse hikes in Arizona. The trail begins at the back door of the Nature Conservancy Visitor Center. Here we need to purchase a $8 permit per person in order to cross the preserve and access the Hamburg Trail at Ramsey Creek. About 10 minutes into the hike you'll come to the James Cabin & an old sycamore tree dating back to 1760. From here, the trail goes uphill and includes some minor switchbacks before crossing into the Coronado National Forest and the Miller Peak Wilderness. You are rewarded with views of lower Ramsey Canyon and the San Pedro River Valley. Above the switchbacks, the trail drops back down to the creek and follows it through a lush and beautiful riparian zone. Along this stretch, small waterfalls tumble past gnarly sycamores and lacy-limbed firs, and the trail crosses the creek five or six times as it climbs toward the upper elevations of the Huachuca Mountains. Eventually, after an hour and a half and 2.5 miles, you’ll come to a point where the Hamburg Trail intersects the Wisconsin Trail, which leads into Wisconsin Canyon. This is the turnaround point for this hike, but before you head back, make a perimeter check. Along with the scenic beauty, this area includes the remains of some leveled homesites that were part of Hamburg’s mining camp. There’s not much left, but the area makes a great place to stretch your legs and grab a snack.

If you do NOT wish to spend the night, you will need to leave Ahwatukee by 5am Saturday to obtain a permit from the Nature Conservancy visitor center 520.378.2785 and hike with us at 8:45am!

Those of you carpooling or caravanning on Friday, please be at the Pecos Park N Ride (40th Street and Pecos Rd off the I-10) by 10am Friday to load vehicles. We will make a quick pit stop at the Shell station at exit 267 Valencia Rd in Tucson and maybe grab some lunch somewhere. Back on the I-10, take exit 302 (AZ90S) to Sierra Vista and Ramsey Canyon Inn!
