What we’re about
Welcome to the Aachen Book Club!
*Who is the club for?*
Short answer: anyone who wants to join. If you are unsure that the book club is for you, check if one of the situations below sounds familiar:
- you read a book and wish all your friends would drop everything and read it too, so you can discuss it;
- you find yourself stuck reading very similar books and wonder what others are reading and if you are missing something exciting;
- you are curious about what the author meant by a particular passage and if other people interpret the text in the same way;
- you just want to spend a couple of hours talking about more than the weather.
*How does it work?*
1. We meet each month to discuss a book that has been selected by the group. If you recently loved a book, then pitch it to the group and we might select it.
2. The meeting starts with the person who recommended the book saying a few words about why they chose it.
3. We then discuss what stood out in the book for us: both positive and negative comments are welcome. There are no limits to the discussion - you don't need to be a literary critic to participate. Usually this part of the meeting lasts about 1.5 hours, but it varies depending on the book. You don't have to finish the book to come to the club, but you should be warned that we will reveal spoilers during the discussion.
4. Once the book discussion is done, we talk about potential new books to read next month and make our choice.
5. Those who want to can stay behind for drinks and miscellaneous conversations.
*Where can I get this months Book?*
You can get this months book or any book you want by ordering it from a small local Bookstore here in Aachen:
You can search for any book you are looking for on their website and then pick it up at their BookStore or even have it delivered to your home.
You don't necessarily have to buy the books from them but by doing so you end up supporting a small local book store which helps create more cozy places in Aachen for events to take place as well as create communities in Aachen.
*Where do we meet?*
We meet at the Stadtbibliothek Aachen (Couvenstraße 15, 52062 Aachen). We're usually sitting on the first floor (to the left when coming up with the stairs and right when coming up with the elevator.), on a table in the far back.
Feel free to ask for help from the receptionists or any personell at the Library.
Thanks to their support, participation in the book club is free of charge. So check out the library and often a times they have the books we read so consider becoming a member. They also have events like the Bücherbazar (sale of used books) on Thursdays.
