Hike SNP: Staunton River to Bear Church Rock (2,329' ascent, 8.2 miles)

Details

DESCRIPTION: This strenuous hidden jewel of a hike is best visited in the late spring/early summer when the numerous thickets of mountain laurel and wild azalea are in full bloom. Wildflowers such as pink lady’s slippers are present along much of the trail during the spring and summer. The hike features a gorgeous river pounding down through a rocky gorge, sweeping views from Bear Church Rock as well as over 1,000 acres of old-growth forest in the Staunton River Valley.

Unlike many of the other picturesque hikes in the Shenandoah National Park, the Bear Church Rock circuit is not nearly as well known. This hike starts along the beautiful Rapidan River, then heads up alongside Staunton River with small falls and pools, before making a steep climb to the panoramic outcropping of views at Bear Church Rock.

This hike also does a short 0.6 mile out and back detour to the magnificent Jones Mountain Cabin. The cabin sits next to a stream that runs most times of the year, and is maintained and available for rent from the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club.
