The Ancestral Puebloans chose Mesa Verde, now **UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE**, as their home over a millennium ago, building an elaborate culture among the canyons and cliffs. Learn about these prehistoric Puebloan people as you trace park history from its discovery to the Native Americans who share Four Corners country today, and hear about railroad and Colorado mining history during a full-day field trip aboard the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. The steam train will take you to San Juan mountain area which is called by some Switzerland of America.

**ACTIVITY LEVEL:** KEEP THE PACE
***Non-hiking***. Walking up to one-half mile over varied terrain. Must be able to climb short ladder at ruins. Elevations up to 9,700 feet.

Airfare is not included. Southwest does not fly to Durango. Your choice is United (about $600 a round trip which includes $60-online check in one checked baggage for a round trip) or American.

*This is my bucket list. The park is the ruins of large Native American cliff and canyon dwellings. And the train ride to a mining town Silverton ascends nearly 3,000 feet by a steam train through some of the most dramatic terrain ever traversed by rail up into the Rocky Mountains.*

***♦️NOTE: A rental car and volunteer drivers are needed from Durango airport to the lodge. Or we’ll take a taxi for 55 miles. With that in mind, if 3 or 4 people travel together, we can share a round trip transportation. No shuttle is available.***
