AYM: Saddle Mountain Hike
Details
Note, this is provisional hike for future hike leader Jane Hammaker.
Come out for a winter hike! Depending on the weather, we'll consider two route options. Plan A is Saddle Mountain, but due to relatively high elevation and exposure, there's a chance that conditions will be icy and unsafe for a large group. The backup plan is hiking Ecola State Park, which is at a lower elevation and should be safe (albeit, wet and muddy!) regardless of conditions. Leaders will monitor weather and finalize our hike plan by 2pm December 7th.
If folks are interested in carpooling, we’ll plan to meet at Sunset Transit Center to arrange rides at 7:30AM Dec 8th for either hike.
Plan A: Saddle Mountain. 1,900 elevation gain, 5.2 miles out-and-back [map]
- If we're lucky -- views of the ocean and the Cascades. It will be muddy and possibly icy, so bring micro spikes if you have them. Expect to turn around if leaders determine conditions are too sketchy to continue.
- No parking fee; Vault toilets at trailhead. No drinking water.
- Possibly stop for food in Cannon Beach on the way home.
Plan B: Ecola State Park - Indian Beach to Tillamook Head. 1,350 elevation, 8ish miles out-and-back [map]
- Beautiful, muddy trail with amazing ocean views.
- Ecola State Park charges a $5 fee for parking (Oregon State Parks pass will work) ; Vault toilets at trailhead. No drinking water.
- Possibly stop for food (Public Coast?) on way home.
Gear list:
- 10 essentials
- Micro spikes for Plan A
- Your best rain gear
- Snacks, water and lunch @ the summit or beach
