Camille Claudel: A Woman Artist in 19th-Century France
Details
Camille Claudel was in many ways a pioneering artist. Her avid pursuit of the medium of sculpture, a practice most commonly associated with male artists, set her apart from many other women of her day. Andrea Morgan will provide an overview of Claudel's somewhat tumultuous life but emphasize her unique and expressive approach to sculpting the human form. She will also contextualize Claudel’s career within the period in which she was working, exploring the ways she and other women navigated the complexities of the nineteenth-century art world. In English.
Andrea Morgan is the Research Associate in the department of Painting and Sculpture of Europe at the Art Institute of Chicago. She holds a PhD in Art History from Queen's University in Ontario, Canada, and an MA from Tufts University. Her research interests include 18th- and 19th-century British and French art, provenance studies and women as artists and collectors.
