Accent and Decent of the Superstition Mountains

Details

Join us for an exhilarating adventure as we hike up the back of Stegosaurus and traverse over to the breathtaking peak that towers over Flatiron, culminating in a descent back down!

This hike promises to be a rewarding challenge, and you'll feel a great sense of accomplishment upon completion. Having tackled most of this trail myself, I can assure you that the stunning views make every step worthwhile.

Prepare for a steep journey!

We will kick off our adventure at Jacob’s Crosscut Trailhead. From there, we’ll follow the scenic path to Massacre Falls. Just before reaching the falls, we’ll veer left and embark on our steep ascent to the back of Stegosaurus. Once we reach the summit, we'll take a right turn and make our way to the peak that overlooks Flatiron. After soaking in the panoramic views, we’ll embark on a steep descent back down to Jacob's Crosscut Trail.

From the time we take a left at Massacre Falls to the time we are at the the base of the Superstitions we will be off trail.

Expect some light scrambling and bushwhacking along the way, adding an element of fun and challenge to adventure.

We will maintain an average hiking speed, with both ascent and descent taking a bit longer to accommodate everyone’s pace. Remember, we’re all in this together as a team, and we want everyone to finish strong. I am an encouraging leader.

The spiny pinnacles at the top of the photo I have named Stegosaurus due to their resemblance to the back of a stegosaurus—an iconic sight that adds character to our journey.

Trail Details:

  • Elevation: Approximately 2,800 feet
  • Distance: 9 to 10 miles
  • Time: 6 to 8 hours (depending on group pace; it can be completed in five hours, but let's plan for up to eight hours for safety).

What to Bring:

  • Long pants and long-sleeve shirts are recommended for climbing over rocks and navigating through brush. The apparel you wear is up to you.
  • Hiking poles for added stability.
  • At least three liters of water and snacks to keep your energy up.

This is more than just a hike; it’s an opportunity to connect with nature and each other.
