Last Friday evening walk of the year. Meet at the junction of Thorpes Road and Heanor Gate Road, at 7pm for a 7.10pm start. Dispersed roadside parking nearby. Walk via Shipley Park to Smalley, call at the Bell Inn for around 40 minutes, and return via a different route. Paved or lose surfaced tracks throughout but may be muddy in places. Torch essential. Estimate 4.5 miles. Walk will be cancelled at least 2 hours beforehand if heavy rain or snow forecast.

The information below is for any first-timer signing-up for Friday walks.

Friday walks aim to be a social evening combined with some exercise, maybe explain a little local history, and a brief pub stop at or near the end. You must be able to walk at a pace of around 2.5 miles per hour on level ground. Please read the walk description carefully for any notes about the expected terrain. You must be able to negotiate steps, stiles, muddy bits etc without expecting any help from others. There will always be a few brief breaks at tops of hills or points of interest. No special walking clothing is required, but please wear shoes or boots appropriate to the season and described terrain. A small torch is recommended for dark evenings. A sense of humour is essential. You may bring your pet DOG, providing well behaved and kept on a short lead at ALL times. Please make your own checks as to whether pet dogs are allowed inside the stated pub. Friday walks are a group of friends going walking together. Leaders are amateur and volunteers. Care is taken in planning routes, and are usually pre-walked less than two weeks beforehand, but you are ultimately responsible for your own safety.
