What we’re about
What: AmherstSec is an Amherst based security-focused networking group. We are a group of security minded individuals with the purpose of having open discussion about security related topics. Typically, we have a general theme for an evening to help spur some shared thought. Periodically someone might wish to informally present some work, or new work that is not yet acted on but just thinking about... this is encouraged and supported, but by no means required for this meet up.
This is intended to be very informal and relaxed :-)
When/where: We meet on the 3rd Thursday (previously, 2nd Wednesdays until September, 2022) of each month 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm. Since early 2020, we have been meeting virtual / online only. Starting February 16, 2023, we will be meeting again in-person at Paragus Strategic IT (112 Russell St, Hadley, MA).
Why: Similar meetings occur in Boston, but that's a hike from Amherst. Further, with the individuals in the Amherst area, it is worth the while to take time for us to share knowledge and discuss new ideas. We may all work in different sub-fields of Security, but we all have a similar mindset.

Title:
Let’s Talk About Personal Digital Privacy and SecurityAbstract:
This session will help attendees understand our privacy and security options online. Many do the basics, like patching and updating operating systems and browsers. But certainly, there is more we can do. How can we maintain our privacy when visiting websites? How can we stay safe online? How can we ensure our sensitive information is protected or managed correctly? We will discuss some of the “best practices “ that have evolved in this world of daily data breaches and other ways digital privacy and security have been compromised. This is a revisit of a topic we have covered before, but it's never a bad time to think about it again, especially with AI/DeepFake threats and related issues.
(NOTE: This talk was also recently given at the Friends of the Enfield Library monthly event on October 29, 2024)
