What we’re about
We live in a time fraught with challenges while simultaneously being pummeled day in and day out with inaccurate and mind-numbing negativity. How do we inoculate ourselves from the effects of the challenges of this time? How do we use chaos to uplift our own lives and the lives of those around us?
Marcus Aurelius would tell us “The Obstacle is the Way.” Chaos and difficult times bring the greatest opportunities.
From the times of Zeno (334BC-262BC), through the life of Marcus Aurelius (121AD-180AD), the philosopher King, and as followed by some of our greatest generals and military leaders today, this ongoing practice has bolstered and uplifted humankind across the ages and through the most violent of times.
What is its purpose of Stoicism and how does it help? The only reason to study philosophy is to become a better person.
Stoicism is steeped in the belief that deeds are more important than mere ideas; (although ideas are also very important). And Seneca, the Roman philosopher would add “What is the purpose to reading and study if not to live a happy life?
I created this group to accomplish these things:
- Provide social opportunities to nurture mind and spirit during a time of great societal loneliness.
- Provide a forum for bringing forth the best in individuals and our community
- Support emotional well-being in persons seeking positive group experiences.
We will begin by meeting twice a month for coffee, readings and discussion. Feel free to recommend a location (coffee houses, etc).
Those wishing to help with the group, please contact me with information and suggestions. Also, please tell me about your prior experiences with Stoicism, if you have had prior practice with this philosophy.
