Navigation Essentials - An Introduction to Navigation
Details
Learn the essential basics of map reading during a half day outdoors to give you the skills you need to confidently find your way around the countryside.
We will start in a café with a introduction to maps and then head outside to learn basic techniques including:
– orientating the map
– using obvious handrails
– understanding map features and symbols
– measuring distances, timing and pacing
– safety, kit choices and the Countryside Code
No experience necessary, but of course you are welcome to join us if you have some experience and want to brush up! This day can be a preparation or taster day if you would like to build up to more advanced navigation or are considering taking a Bronze or Silver award with the National Navigation Award Scheme. I do provide those courses and can talk to you about them when we meet.
I supply maps and compasses, but feel free to bring your own along if you have them - we will be using OS Explorer 171 Chiltern Hills West.
