X-Country Ski Tour of AMC Maine Woods Initiative Lodges

Details

Join the Maine Chapter for a ski and snowshoe tour of the Maine North Woods with stays at AMC's Little Lyford Lodge and Cabins, West Branch Pond Camps and AMC's Medawisla Lodge and Cabins. X-country skiers with advanced intermediate skills will find this trip enjoyable. We start from the winter parking lot a few miles from Greenville with a 2 night stay at Little Lyford Lodge and Cabins. We ski to Little Lyford Pond Lodge and Cabins via the Hedgehog Gate Trail (8 miles). The co-ed bunkhouse is reserved for us with 14 beds available. Private cabins are also available. Possible activities there include a snowshoe hike to the summit of nearby Indian Mountain, ski Indian Mountain circuit trail or Baker Pond Loop Trail, ski/snowshoe to Gulf Hagas, explore nearby trails that surround the Little Lyford Ponds, read a good book, take a nap... Next, it is on to West Branch Pond Camp. We stay in comfortable cabins as there is no bunkhouse. Some cabins sleep several people and participants are expected to share a cabin with others as necessary. There is a variety of advanced beginner and advanced intermediate ski trails, some on the flanks of White Cap Mountain and others that follow the West Branch of the Pleasant River, Several snowshoe trails are also available. Easier skiing on the loop around West Branch Pond is another option. West Branch Pond Camps is privately owned (not AMC) and has been in the Sterling family for over 100 years. Lastly, we ski to Medawisla Lodge and Cabins for our final 2 nights of the trip. Again one of two bunkhouses is reserved for our use, with additional private cabins also available. Various activities including either skiing or snowshoeing are possible from this lodge with nearby Shaw Mountain, Trout Mountain and a loop trail around 2nd Roach Pond if conditions allow. Advanced skiers might enjoy skiing the Skyline Trail on Shaw Mountain. Medawisla is the only MWI lodge that we can drive to in winter so spotting cars there will be possible and necessary. Contact leaders for further details and for details on booking reservations. Do not attempt to book reservations without getting reservation number from your trip leaders.
