Beautiful Blue Mts- Gardens of Stone national park - wilderness hike

Details

Summary- We will do a round circuit walk of about 15-16km in the Gardens of Stone State Recreation Area, between Bilpin and Lithgow. Specifically, around Snow Gum Reserve, and getting down to Marragooto Creek.

1- Transport- we shall meet at Strathfield train station at 9am and do any necessary car polling for anyone without a car.
Takes about 90 min hour drive from Straithfield.

2- The terrain: this is ‘pagoda’ landscape, which are like sandstone rock towers, surrounded by alpine heath and grasses. We will pass over the highest point in the Blue Mts, as well as through gentle canyons and creeks. It’s very different to the dense vegetation typical of the upper Blue Mts around Blackheath or Katoomba. It is more like alpine grassy country, more friendly for walkers in fact.

3- Walking fitness- There are options for our route, and nearby fire trails if we experience problems, but my preferred route involve some moderate amount of off track walking, meaning some scrabbling through bush at times, and over rock formations with some moderate exposure. It’s not too technical or dangerous but you need to be steady in your boots. To avoid complaints, I suggest only persons who are reasonably confident hikers. Proper hiking boots essential, no sneakers. I suggest gaitors are a good idea, and long pants to prevent scratching your legs. I go at a moderate pace, certainly not fast.

4- The sales pitch- The remote and rugged terrain has its definite rewards- the scenery is breathtaking is parts, especially because so few people come here- it’s wild. If you love wilderness, and need a breath of fresh air from civilisation, and think about nothing but nature, this walk is for you. It’s my actual favourite Blue Mts walk- come see why. As is usual on my walks, we have a 30 min silent period after lunch.

5- Did someone say swimming?
Swimming options at the creek, nice if we get a hot day.

Please bring at least 2L of water, lunch, snacks, hat, sunscreen, jacket in case of a change in weather, sturdy walking shoes and a sense of fun and adventure!

Payment $10 on the day
