Does the United States have a dominant Unofficial Religion?
Our meetup is a safe space for exploring challenging topics. We value diverse perspectives and aim to learn from one another, not to prove who’s right. By sharing insights, we can uncover a deeper understanding together.
What We’re Talking About
The First Amendment declares, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". But in practice, do we have an unofficial national belief system that shapes our culture and values?
Consider this:
- Our currency says, "In God We Trust".
- The Pledge of Allegiance refers to "One Nation Under God".
- Christmas is a Federal Holiday.
These might point to a specific religious influence, but does this unofficial “religion” go deeper?
- Is there a perception of “God” as a white man with a beard?
- Do we equate wealth with divine favor and poverty with moral failure?
- Is there a shared origin story about fleeing oppression, claiming a promised land, and justifying harm in the process?
- Where does consumerism fall? Can it be defined as a ritual or even a societal standard and value by itself?
Why This Matters
Our shared beliefs—whether official or unofficial—shape how we see ourselves, others, and the world around us. By examining these cultural narratives, we can better understand their impact on our values, decisions, and the way we define community. Are these ideas bringing us closer together, or are they reinforcing divisions? Exploring these questions helps us think critically about the stories we live by and their role in shaping our society.
Let’s discuss these questions and more through personal stories and thoughtful exploration. Join us for a slower-paced, engaging discussion in a small group setting. You may not leave with all the answers, but you will walk away with new perspectives and ideas.
Where and When
We’ll meet in the TV Room below the baristas (we'll post how to find us when we get there). Street parking is available on Steele. Come early to connect with new and old friends—we’ll begin the discussion promptly at 5:30 PM.
