FEBRUARY 1 - 8 - LANZAROTE & LA GRACIOSA

Backabush is heading to Lanzarote to explore its lava-formed landscapes on foot and to soak up some welcome winter sun. We will also visit the tiny neighbouring island of La Graciosa, one of the most peaceful and serene spots in the Canaries.

Lanzarote might not have the high mountains of Tenerife or Gran Canaria, but what it lacks in altitude it makes up for in vibrant geology and sensational coastlines. February is a great time of year to hike in Lanzarote. With average highs of 21 degrees we can enjoy ourselves in comfortable temperatures out on the trails.

The island is characterised by its dramatic volcanic history and is littered with volcanic craters, ancient lava flows and black sand beaches. Our 6 hiking days are planned to explore the best trails, views and scenery on each corner of the island. We will visit Timanfaya National Park, the only volcanically active region on the island. We will ascend the crater ridgelines of the island's largest calderas to see the vibrant red sands and views across the ocean below. We will also have the chance to hike along some of the island's fantastic coastline between sandy beaches, perfect for a swim in the sunshine.

Just off the north coast of Lanzarote is the peaceful island of La Graciosa. This island has no asphalt roads and a population of only 700. We plan to catch the passenger ferry across to the island for a day trip to walk the isolated sandy trails of the 8th official Canary Island.

ACCOMMODATION
We will be staying in a lovely 4 star hotel in the town of Costa Teguise, an area popular for its broad golden beach. It is located about half way down the east coast which gives us great access to the hikes without excessive driving.

We have booked a set of suites at the hotel, all the rooms have a terrace or balcony as well as a living room and kitchenette. There are shared twin room and private single room options. The hotel also has outdoor swimming pools, a spacious bar and a spa treatment centre.

Evening meals are included and will be served each night at the hotel, buffet style, with plenty of choice and something for everyone.

DIFFICULTY
On this trip you will need to be capable of walking 9 miles with up to 600m of ascent and descent each day, the trails will be a bit loose at times and often sandy underfoot.

Our airport transfers will be timed to meet the following flights, if you choose to book different flight times then please meet us at the airport arrivals at 16:45 on Saturday 1st or make your own way to the hotel.
