Zazen Meditation Instruction
Details
Learn and practice the fundamental techniques of Zen Buddhist meditation (zazen). These techniques are not complicated, allow us to focus and calm our wandering minds and emotions, and open our awareness to the world around us.
In this introductory session, methods of sitting meditation are reviewed. Meditation instruction includes a discussion of breathing and stilling the mind, followed by short periods of meditation practice. Different sitting postures for meditation are also reviewed, including methods for sitting on meditation cushions and in chairs.
Beginner's Mind Zen Center provides zabutons (mats) and zafus (cushions/pillows) for everyone's use, as well as a variety of other chairs, benches, etc.; you need only bring yourself. For your comfort, wear loose or stretch clothing; for others' comfort, please wear muted colors, and try to avoid wearing strong fragrances. As you will remove your shoes to enter the zendo, you may want to wear socks (or not).
As an introductory guide to meditation practice, you may also find this information from our website helpful: http://www.beginnersmindzencenter.org/howtosit.html
Participants have the opportunity to ask questions about meditation practice from qualified teachers in the Soto Zen Buddhist tradition.
