Newtownards Floodgates Walk
Details
Walk grade: Leisurely, approximately 4 miles (see guide below)
This is a linear walking route on an easy, level path along the northern shore of Strangford Lough. The path is on the sea defenses that protect reclaimed lands to the south of Newtownards. There is more information and a video at https://www.walkni.com/walks/floodgates-walk/
The sea wall protects the large area of reclaimed land which is now part of Newtownards town and the ULster Flying Club. There are great views of Strangford Lough and Scrabo Hill, which looms above the town. The area is rich in bird life, so bring binoculars if that's your thing.
We'll meet at Londonderry Park on Portaferry Road (opposite the Flying Club) where there's plenty of parking. (There's also a small carpark (twenty spaces) at the start of the walk and if both of those are full the Flying Club has a large carpark). We'll start with a short walk along the Portaferry Road to the start of the Floodgates Walk. After the walk, we can get refreshments in Cloud 9 restaurant at the Flying Club.
Walk for paid up members is £1. Non members pay £6.
Walking Shoes or trainers are fine on this walk, it's all flat paths.
Public Transport isn't great, so post up if you need a lift, telling us roughly where you're coming from (not your home address!), and a driver may oblige. Please give your driver something towards the fuel costs.
Can't make it - just update your RSVP please so we know not to wait on you.
See you there! As always you can text or phone me on 07583 042962 if you're lost! Maria
