What we’re about

Tired of book clubs choosing the same books over and over again? Milan Kundera’s sexist "The Unbearable Lightness of Being", Matt Haig's predictable "The Midnight Library" or Paulo Coelho's overrated "The Alchemist"?

We were too and that's why we decided to create the Beyond Borders Readers Club!

  • Why Beyond Borders?
Our intention is to motivate ourselves and the group to read books by authors and about topics that are beyond what we’re used to. We want to cross the borders of reading books mainly written in English, avoiding where possible, books from best seller lists, as well as stepping away from reading mainly male authors and other authors who are already over-represented in the publishing industry.
  • Why Readers Club?
We aim to set the focus on the readers as well as the books. Because would books even exist without there being someone to read them?
  • Our Book Picks
Each month a book will be chosen using the following guidelines where possible:
    - Preferably female and non cis-gender authors
    - Authors and/or stories that represent minority groups
    - The original language of the book is not English
    - The book is easily available in Barcelona.

We encourage readers to make future book suggestions, so if you have some in mind that fit in with the criteria mentioned above, bring them along to one of our next meetings!

***All discussions will be held in English and in-person in Barcelona.***

Before attending, please ensure you are familiar with our Community Guidelines as outlined below:

  • Aim to arrive at the scheduled time
  • Allow others to share without interrupting
  • Help foster a group dynamic by avoiding dispersing into smaller groups
  • Maintain a device-free environment where possible
  • Come with an open mind and curiosity!
