Visit Ankeny NWR with Julian Hwa & Erik Bergman. Ankeny NWR is home to thousands of geese during the winter, and there are also Acorn Woodpeckers. We will meet at the Park ‘N Ride to carpool at the Bridgeport Exit #290 at 7 a.m. Directions: south on I-5, take the Bridgeport Exit #290, then turn right (west), then turn left to the Park ‘N Ride. North on I-5, take Exit #290, turn left (west), and turn left again into the Park ‘N Ride. We will then form carpools to Ankeny. Please bring a lunch. Scopes would be helpful. Let me know if you need binoculars. We encourage carpooling, and will provide radios for communications and safety.

Join Julian Hwa & Ron Escano, for a waterfowl and winter sparrow adventure on Sauvie Island. Meet at 1 pm at the East Side Check Station Parking Lot on the corner of Reeder and Rentenaar Roads. We will walk Rentenaar Road and back (1.6 miles round trip). Should be done by 4pm. All vehicles will need a Sauvie Island parking permit. From the Sauvie Island bridge take Sauvie Island Rd north 2 miles to the intersection with Reeder Rd. Turn right on Reeder and continue north 9 miles to the Eastside Check Station and Rentenaar Rd on the left (allow 25 minutes to drive from the bridge to the check station). Dress for the weather.

Join Julian Hwa for a walk through this manmade, yet very lively group of ponds. This is an excellent time to see Acorn Woodpeckers on the back side of the park, as well as Wood Ducks, Common Mergansers, and other ducks up close. Meet at the north end of the parking lot of the Hillsboro Library at 2850 NE Brookwood Pkwy in Hillsboro.

Join Julian Hwa, as we explore the fields and wetlands of Columbia County while walking the east end of the Crown Zellerbach Trail. The path is level and almost entirely paved. It offers views of fields, marshes, sloughs, ponds and hedgerows on its way to the Multnomah Channel. Round trip will be about 2.5 miles. Bring a snack and dress for the weather. Bring binoculars (or tell me if you need to borrow a pair). Spotting scopes are useful here, so bring one if you have it. Sparrows, raptors and waterfowl should be abundant this time of year.
