What we’re about
This group is for everyone-whether you’re a beginner, experienced or just bird curious. This is not a competitive group-I aim to introduce folks to a more wholistic way of enjoying birds. This group will also provide a safe and nurturing environment for everyone- including women, the LGBTQIA+ community, and BIPOC folks as we connect with the natural world. But, why birding? Let me tell you!
Spending time looking for and observing birds is great for your physical, mental, and emotional health. It connects you to nature in a way that goes beyond just hiking. It teaches you observation skills, and, if you choose, it can open the doors to making new friends.
It's flexible-you can bird only in your backyard, or you can choose to travel the world to see as many birds as possible. It keeps you sharp-because once you have seen a bird, you just want to learn as much as you can about it. It is really the perfect pastime when you think about it!
I am an experienced birder, conservationist, educator and public speaker on birds-the main goals of our gatherings will be to enjoy nature, see birds and learn all we can about everything around us. I moved to Rockland in Oct ‘22, and as a beginner (very, very VERY beginner) botanist (okay, I’m really a wannabe botanist), I look forward to exploring all the flora and fauna of the area with other equally enthusiastic nature lovers!! I am also a member of the Palisades Interstate Park League of Naturalists, conducting bird surveys at Harriman SP.
I present public programs on a variety of bird related topics. For anyone interested, my schedule can be found here: https://syosset.wbu.com/upcoming-programs
I’ve kept the walks to a minimum because I’m nursing a torn hip labrum from a car accident, and walking is pretty painful. BUT…surgery is scheduled for May 2 and once I get okay from doctor, I plan on offering monthly walks!
Update: monthly bird walks should resume in September-surgery went well and I’m in full recovery mode!
Update: recovery has taken a crappy slowdown. I am going to start scheduling monthly bird walks in October. They’re just going to be easy!
