The Wagner Walk
Details
The Wagner Walk - Victorian churches vanished and standing (and a few other things). Thanks to Cara Courage for this walk, first done in 2015!
Father and Son, Henry and Arthur Wagner, both vicars, transformed the religious life of Brighton in the 19th Century. They founded 11 churches between them and also dabbled in schools and housing, usually funding good works from their own pockets. As Anglo-Catholics and Tories they were often out of step with the tone of the resort and were no strangers to controversy.
This ramble seeks to consider two eminent Brightonians who left their mark but are seldom celebrated through the buildings they influenced. Some still stand, others are gone. Starting at the huge St Bartholomew’s Church, we’ll chart a roughly semi-circular course that takes us via Lewes Road, Hanover, into Kemp Town and back to the town centre. We’ll finish up on West Street at the majestic ‘rocketship’ of St Paul’s.
Terrain: It will be hilly!
We'll start at 11:00 so make sure you're here by then.
If you'd like to help me pay the Meetup charges, I'll happily accept a one-pound donation at the end.

MEET: Meet at the front of Brighton Station near where the taxi rank used to be (close to the toilets and travel centre). Look for the chap in the blue and white baseball cap with a blue B on the front.
