What we’re about
A dead simple group. We choose a book for the next meeting and then meetup to discuss it over a drink. The books are important, but the getting together, discussing the book while making new friends is what it is really all about.
While we normally meet in a pub to discuss a book, we will also shake it up from time to time by reading a book by for example a Turkish author and then meeting and discussing it over a meal in a Turkish restaurant. If a film is coming out at the cinema based on the book, we will read the book and discuss and then go to the cinema to see the filmed version and discuss how the book was interpreted. We will also do sessions when we come together just to discuss a book we have read away from the group and loved.
It's not intellectual or highbrow and we will read books from all genres and from authors from around the world to challenge a normal reading habits. We try to read books that are not too long so that people who want to come to every meeting have time to read the book.
I don't charge for meetings, but will accept the occasional drink as thanks.
It can seem daunting coming along to a meeting for the first time on your own. We have all experienced those feelings at our first meeting, not knowing what to expect. The meetup is called a Book Gang, but it's not that sort of gang. New people come along to every meeting. New faces and points of view are welcomed at every meeting. It is social and friendly, with the book a theme with which the evening revolves around, but with wider ideas and issues discussed.
Rebels, book lovers, dreamers and those who love discussing interesting books, you are all welcome here. Why a 'Gang' and not a Book Club? Well Book Clubs are cosy, quaint places..
The Book Gang is meant to be a place where we read challenging titles, across different cultures and then come together to discuss it all. EVERYONE is welcome. Whether you're a fan of the classics (or however you define them) or whether you just fancy a good discussion around literature. The Bristol Book Gang is all about lively discussion and debate around books we're reading as a group as well as a social evening where you can meet new like minded people that share a common interest.
I try and have two or three forthcoming meetings listed as some people need more time to plan ahead their reading and because not everyone can come to every meeting or fancy every book choice. Meetings will be held approximately every two to three weeks, so if you can't make one, a new meeting is not too far away.
