Wharton State Forest 6ish miles + Historic Batsto Village
Details
IMPORTANT - The entrance for visitor parking is at the intersection of Hammonton Rd and Batsto Rd. Make sure you navigate to this intersection!!!
This hike will be a 6ish mile round trip moderately paced, mostly flat walk on wooded paths through the pine forests of Wharton State Forest near Historic Batsto Village. The hike will be comprised of 2 loops, a short 2 mile loop and then a 4 mile loop. We'll start by heading into the pine forest on a trail cushioned by fallen pine needles atop compacted sand. We'll return from the forest on a trail that parallels the coast of Batsto Lake where we can explore some of the side trails to get even closer to the water. From there we'll cross thru Historic Batsto Village and take our 2nd loop trail that brings us along the Mullica River.
After the hike, you can stroll through Historic Batsto Village to explore and photograph the historic structures. Or join me for a visit to downtown Hammonton - I'll be grabbing coffee there at Casciano Coffee Bar & Sweetery.
We will begin introductions at 9:30am in the parking lot near the path to the Visitors Center. (Restrooms available at Visitors Center).
Hiking shoes strongly recommended. Pine needles may be slippery. Hiking poles may be helpful but not required. Some muddy patches can be expected if there is recent rain. Dress for the weather.
Don't forget your water and snacks.
Members of all skill levels, whether using an iPhone or DSLR, will have many opportunities for photos while we are walking on this hike.
Steady rain cancels event. Update will be posted in Meetup by 7 am the day of the event.
If you sign up for this event and your plans change, Please remember to update your RSVP in Meetup.
