Shakyo & Shabutsu Practice
Details
Sutra Copying (Shakyo)
In the Lotus Sutra we see five practices of the Dharma Teacher.
To Hold, Read, Recite, Copy and Spread the Buddha's teaching. In Nichiren Shu all these are practiced. During morning and evening service we chant the Sutra, holding the Sutra in our hearts, reading and reciting. We copy the sutra as a form of mindfulness meditation. The practice is done formally with meditation, copying, and dedication. It is not necessary to be a calligrapher. We start by learning to use a brush and Sumi (ink), progressing with tracing, then on to writing freehand. If you would like to do this practice please talk to Ryuoh Shonin. Most of the supplies needed will be provided. We do ask that you get your own brush (we have brushes for purchase at the Temple)

Shabutsu is to copy images of the Buddha. A similar practice tracing images of the Buddha or Bodhisattvas.
