Building A Home For The Homeless!
Details
Hi! We are a passionate team of engineers and organizers who want to help build a better Portland. On Saturday, November 23rd, we will start building this home for an unhoused neighbor together! This will be a fun event with a community lunch, time to socialize, and an experience to learn about the work happening in Portland. There will be professionals to guide and instruct everyone as we help assemble a concrete block foundation and frame 2x4 walls.
The tiny home is being built on the property of Cultivate Initiatives; an amazing nonprofit whose work includes community beatification, portable showers, work opportunities for unhoused neighbors, and managing a tiny home community of 50+ residents.
We will get started at 11:00am as we set up a free lunch for everyone involved. The lunch will include homemade baguettes, soup, and warm beverages. At noon, the build leaders will walk everyone through the various roles and work we will be doing. No prior experience is necessary and everyone can help as they are able. From 12pm-3pm we will help set the concrete block foundation, frame and secure the 2x4 framing for the walls, windows, and doorway, and ready each module for later assemblage.
After the work party, we will have further ways to get involved to stay in this amazing community of Portlanders. Right now, we are hanging up flyers in nonprofits, churches, event spaces, and colleges so there will be more participants than those who have RSVPed here (which is limited to 10 anyways). We hope this event brings lasting warmth and excitement to those who care about our city and everyone who lives here. We can't wait to meet you and see you on the 23rd!
