🚩 Red Flags of Fake Meetups Operated by the Shincheonji Cult
Unfortunately, many groups on Meetup, Karrot, Somoim, and even some university groups in Korea are operated by cults, especially the deceptive Shincheonji cult. Here are some tips to dodge the bullets.
- Free Meetups : They offer free activities such as free Korean classes, free tours, free language exchanges, free job consulting, free therapy sessions, free seminars, free guitar classes, free tarot cards, free board games, free drawing, free book clubs, free Bible studies and etc. Their main targets are university students who may not have an income, which is why they promote these meetups as free. Remember, there’s no such thing as a free lunch, especially in Korea.
- Unclear Purpose or Venue : Their sole purpose is to scam people, so they intentionally avoid clearly stating the group’s purpose or the event’s venue.
- Google Form Sign-Up : To join their fake events or groups, they request personal information like your phone number, name, age, university name, and social media accounts. Once they have this information, they share it in their Telegram group to find members who may know you.
- Interrogation : They may probe into your personal concerns and your relationships with family and friends.
- Familiarity : It may seem like they already know each other well, creating an atmosphere of closeness that can be misleading.
- Subsequent Invitations : After a couple of months, they might invite you to seminars or suggest Bible study sessions.

👩❤️👨 About Hosts
As a Korean and German international couple, we started this club as a side project to fully experience Korea together. When we first met, neither of us expected to start a relationship, as we each had plans to leave Korea within three months. But through conversations, we found that our interests—from our geeky personalities and career passions to our similar upbringings and shared dream of moving to another continent—aligned perfectly. Growing up in different countries and backgrounds brought plenty of twists and challenges to overcome. Yet, through it all, we've learned so much from each other, embracing and appreciating our cultural differences along the way. Inspired by this connection, we extended our visas to stay together longer and are now planning to move to the same country.👥 Ideal Attendees
