If this is your first time at a tournament, Ann and Margaret will need your phone number and you will need theirs. Please send it to us through messages. They need it to be able to contact you, if you're running late, or a no show (have to cancel last minute). Since tournaments are are in people’s homes, we DON’T allow any NEW members, whether they know how to play or not, Reservations only needed for players (not non playing guests) and are only for members who have attended socials and tournaments before and know how to play. Your name will be removed if you don't comply.
It's Christmas party, mini tournament, ugly sweater contest and gift exchange at Dianne and Jerry's home.
5:30-6:30 Eat and socialize
6:30-7:30 White Elephant Gift Exchange - in this context, a “White Elephant” gift is something you don’t want, but is at least extremely funny and something someone else may find a treasure, or bring a new item you would like to take home (see below for limits). DO NOT GIFT ITEMS NO ONE WANTS (e.g., any items that show wear). Current market value should be about $20. No old cables and junk gifts please. Bring something you'd want to bring home.
Traditionally, white elephant gifts are items you already own that you’ve never used or are in excellent condition. If you can’t think of a fun White Elephant gift, go with something $20 or less. Adult beverages have always been extremely popular. All gifts should be wrapped so as to be unrecognizable prior to opening. Each person who wishes to participate must bring one gift.
Couples/groups may choose to bring one gift under $20 and jointly select one gift. Chipping in and buying a $40 gift doesn’t work here—we need the same number of gifts as people taking gifts. Please try to stick to the $20 limit as close as possible.
8:00- approximately 10:00PM Euchre Tournament. This will be a very casual tournament that beginning players are welcome to join. It will be poorly organized and largely chaotic. Leave your competitive spirit at home. Prizes will go to the top score, the most patient mentor (by vote), and the best newbie (top score amongst first-time tournament players).
Bring Potluck Dish and beverage of your choice. Please put in comments what you are bringing. Plates, silverware and cups will be provided by Diane. If you don't want to play in the tournament, please come for the meal and gift exchange. The party and gift exchange is first half the night. This is a fun social night not a serious tournament.
Holiday Sweater contest will have first place in 3 categories: Ugliest, Funniest, and Cutest! Everyone gets to vote even if they’re not participating. If you have any questions, message Ann or Dianne Blakenbaker.
Chattanooga Euchre Meetup Tournament Rules updated 10/31/22
1- Intermediate and advanced players only. We suggest beginners (and those who haven't played in a while) come and learn on Monday and Thursday night. Tournaments are not the time to ask questions on strategy. RESERVATIONS ARE ONLY FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE PLAYING. You may leave information about additional non playing guests in the comments.
2- WE NEED YOUR CELL PHONE NUMBER BEFORE YOU ATTEND THE TOURNAMENT. If you don't provide it by the Thursday before the tournament, you will be moved to "not going" and possible replaced by someone on the waitlist.
3- If you make a reservation and can't attend, please cancel ASAP. We depend on specific numbers to determine play, unlike Mondays and Thursdays. WE START PROMPTLY AT THE STATED TIME (see above). Please arrive 30 minutes (normally 6:30 pm) before the stated time of play (normally 7 pm) to pay and receive your seat number and score sheet. IF YOU CAN'T COME AT THAT TIME, PLEASE DON'T SIGN UP, OR CANCEL ASAP. We understand things happen and you might be late once in a while and we will wait for you if we know you are coming, but please be considerate of others. Comment below if you're running a late. It will be up to the host(s) to decide whether we start without you.
4- We play “a card laid is a card played” except in the case of a renege. If a renege occurs, it can be corrected before the next trick is led without penalty. When discovered, the opposing team receives 2 points (4 points if it is a loner hand) immediately and the play comes to an end. We also play “stick the dealer.” Table talk is not allowed.
Other aspects (number of rounds, “going under,” etc.) depend on the number of players in attendance and will be determined at the tournament. We play with two decks, so that an extra deck will be shuffled for the user of the next dealer. Cutting is not necessary and is strongly discouraged in timed tournaments.
5- The host(s) also determines what type or party (if so desired) the tournament will be. If you wish to participate in the pre-tournament socializing, please bring a side dish, appetizer, or dessert (unless directed otherwise) to share an hour before play. You are welcome to come only for the tournament if you want. Buy-in is determined by the host and split by the top 3 winners. Please help clean up and thank the host(s), too. Not everyone plays the same, so please be patient with others.
