INTRODUCTION BY THE GROUP ORGANISER, BOB
Cafe Science - Basingstoke is a not-for-profit group where anyone is welcome to explore the latest ideas in science, technology and climate change. As the organiser for the group, I now run the group diary from Norwich where I am based, so you will be very unlikely to see me at any in-person events.
ABOUT LOCAL IN-PERSON TALKS
We encourage our subscribers to attend in-person talks hosted by local science discussion groups that are within easy reach of Basingstoke. The groups we publicise include Science in Reading, Winchester Science Cafe, Henley Science Cafe plus Skeptics in the Pub in Winchester and the Science Discovery Group in Emsworth.
The in-person events include a speaker plus a break with a follow-on Q&A discussion of the presentation topic. The speakers will often be researchers and experts in their field invited from local companies and academic centres and are specialists in the subjects under discussion.
IN-PERSON ADMISSION / DONATION FEES
You should be aware that groups running in-person talks will often request an admission fee or donation of up to £5 towards speakers and group expenses.
ONLINE LIVESTREAM TALKS
For those unable to attend the in-person talks, we also provide details of lectures and discussions delivered as on-line livestream talks that you can watch with your family, friends and neighbours. Why not make the most of this great social opportunity by inviting others to join you in a cafe or at home and then have your own discussion afterwards about the topic you watched. The livestream talks and discussions include those from The Royal Institution, The Royal Society, Gresham College and various University public lectures.

Despite the huge advances in space technology in recent decades, much of the universe remains a source of mystery, often provoking more questions than answers. But technology exploring the cosmos continues to progress, from the Hubble telescope first launched in 1990, to the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in December 2021.BBC Sky at Night’s Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock was one of the British space scientists to work on JWST, and will break down the latest and greatest science to come out of the world’s most powerful space telescope. Now over two years since the first stunningly clear images of the depths of our Universe captured by JWST were released, Maggie will demystify the latest images to be produced by James Webb’s groundbreaking infrared technology.
Join us for a night of spectacular space science, and discover how we may finally have the tools to answer the biggest questions surrounding our Universe, and how it came to be.Copies of Maggie's latest book "Webb's Universe: The Space Telescope Images That Reveal Our Cosmic History" will be available to purchase after the talk.

SUMMARY:
There are circa 3.4 million to 10.5 million fungi, they are worldwide in distribution and found in every habitat, from arctic waters to deep sea sediments and hypothermal vents, yet most remain to be discovered. We are in contact with fungi from the moment we take up in the morning until we fall asleep, some are of extreme benefit (Antibiotics, food, bread), to those that are pathogenic to man and plants.

Join us in the Ri Theatre for a first chance to hear from Chris van Tulleken, our eagerly awaited 2024 Christmas Lecturer, who will deliver our prestigious annual November Discourse.Chris van Tulleken is an NHS infectious diseases doctor at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in London, one of the UK’s leading science presenters and a New York Times bestselling author. He is currently an Associate Professor in the division of Infection and Immunity at UCL, where his research focuses on how corporations affect human health, especially in the context of child nutrition, and he works with UNICEF and the World Health Organisation.

The UK Biobank is a large health database and research resource containing anonymous genetic, lifestyle, and health data, as well as biological samples, from 500,000 people in the UK who were recruited between 2006-2010 when they were aged 40-69 years.It is one of the most comprehensive databases of its kind and is available to approved researchers worldwide who are working on health-related studies that benefit the public. The UK Biobank is helping scientists make progress in understanding, preventing, diagnosing, and treating serious illnesses like dementia, cancer, heart disease, and stroke.
SPEAKER
Adam Lewandowski is the Deputy Chief Scientist for UK Biobank and is an Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Science at the University of Oxford. He is responsible for helping develop the scientific strategy for future enhancements to the UK Biobank study.Time: You can arrive from 7pm for a 7:30 start.
