In the summer of 1958 Naydene Maykut was working in the gift shop at Paradise and Gary Rose was a summit guide. She wanted to climb the mountain but was not allowed to until she left her job. When she did that she found another guide. He chose a much more difficult route to the summit.
When she reached it, she was too tired to descend, so he left her there and went down for help. She spent two nights alone on the summit while the three guides climbed there to help her. They set a new speed record getting there.
Naydene will tell us how she managed and coped with the conditions in the crater rim. Steam caves kept her warm on one side but ice cold on the other, She was badly sunburned, but was elated when Dick McGowan, Gil Blynn and Gary Rose showed up to escort her down. The sound of their voices was a huge relief to her.
She will tell her story and Gary will share his memories of this climb, which elicited headlines across the state. Naydene and Gary are glad that their story had a happy ending.
