This is a short but steep hike with an elevation gain of about 500 ft. From the summit you will enjoy a 270-degree view of the Schoharie Valley. Vroman’s Nose itself is bedrock, carved out from limestone, shale and sandstone by thousands of years of glacial activity. The trail may be muddy, snowy or icy depending on the weather — wear hiking boots and if icy, mini-crampons are recommended.

We will follow the aqua trail up and back as that provides the easiest ascent and descent. The aqua trail is part of the Long Trail, a footpath from Altamont all the way to the George Washington Bridge. We will explore other sections of this 347-mile trail on future hikes.

Directions from Albany or points east: Take I-90 west to exit 25A to merge onto I-88 toward NY-7, then from 88 take exit 23 onto 30A toward NY-30. Follow NY-30 to West Middleburgh Road, continue west for .6 miles and watch for the parking area on your left. The drive, from Albany, is about 45 minutes.
