Join us for a festive day in Dordrecht as we explore three fascinating museums, stroll through the historic city centre and parks, and finish with a visit to the charming Christmas markets for some heartwarming glühwein or hot chocolate!

We begin with a visit to the Dordrecht Museum, home to six centuries of art, followed by a delicious lunch at Villa Augustus. Next, we’ll explore two small yet captivating museums: the Patrician Residence Museum and the Huis van Gijn. Along the way, I’ll guide you through Dordrecht’s medieval streets, hidden gems, and scenic parks and share some insights from my cultural science background (-+ 7 km walk), before ending at the Christmas markets.

Gathering 11:00 @ Dordrecht museums reception. After meeting and greeting we start the museum visit.

Programme:

  • 11:00 - 12:00: Visit Dordrecht Museum
  • 12:00 - 12:45: Walk to Wantijpark
  • 12:45 - 14:00: Lunch/drinks at Villa Augustus
  • 14:00 - 14:45: Walk through the city centre and visit two small museums
  • 14:30 - 15:15: Visit Patrician Residence Museum
  • 15:15 - 16:00: Visit Huis van Gijn
  • 16:00 - 17:00: Christmas Markets & Drinks

Dordrecht Museum: A Journey Through 6 Centuries of Art!
Established in 1842, this is one of the oldest art museums in the Netherlands. We’ll explore works from Dordrecht's most famous painter, Albert Cuyp, known for his warm golden landscapes, alongside masterpieces by British artists Thomas Gainsborough and William Turner. Our focus will be on 19th and 20th-century paintings.

Wantij park
A beautifully designed park dating back to 1937, Wantijpark is home to impressive trees like bald cypresses and marsh oaks. Once swampland, it now offers a tranquil space for a pleasant stroll.

Lunch/drinks@ Villa Augustus
Villa Augustus is a charming restaurant situated in a lush vegetable garden. The chefs use organic ingredients, including fresh produce from their own garden.

Dordrecht historical city centre walk
Dordrecht, a water city rich in history, was a prominent trading hub and played a key role in the foundation of the Netherlands, hosting the first meeting of the States of Holland in 1572. As we walk through its medieval streets and alleys, I’ll guide you to hidden gems, picturesque harbours, and along the banks of the Old Meuse.

Patrician residence museum
Step inside this hidden gem, a late 18th-century patrician residence filled with original features and Louis XVI furniture. Explore the house from cellar to attic and admire its art collection.

Museum Huis van Gijn
This unique museum was the home of banker and collector Simon van Gijn, who lived here from 1864 to 1922. The house has been preserved in its original state, offering a glimpse into 19th-century life.

X-MAS Markets & glühwein
After the museums, we go to the Christmas markets with cozy wooden houses and food trucks full of nice products. Here we can have a nice glühwein/hot choco before heading back to the station.

Come and join this combi museums with a nice walk through Dordrechts historical city centre and its parks, enjoying X-MAS markets and glühwein at the end!

  • In the city we walk at 4 km/hour, you should be fit and used to walk 1 to 2 hours long.
  • Carpe Diem is an amateur activity group, participating is at your own risk.
  • The hike might be cancelled or postponed in case of extreme bad weather or few people signed up. Check messages for last-minute updates the evening before.
  • Please sign up only if you plan to attend and are ready to pay the fee upon registration. If something unexpected arises, kindly update your RSVP as soon as possible. Please note that the event fee is non-refundable. A kind request to avoid last-minute cancellations. No-shows will be recorded.
