What we’re about

Welcome to the Charleston Zen Group!

We are a small group of Zen practitioners in the Soto tradition (which emphasizes sitting meditation without the use of koans) that meets once a week on Sunday mornings at Holy Cow Yoga Center. You may have come across us through our website, but if not, you're welcome to visit there for a more complete description: https://charlestonzen.org/about/.

On Sundays, we sit Zazen (seated meditation) for three thirty minute periods beginning at 7:45 am. The meditation periods are separated with ten minute periods of walking meditation. There is a brief period of chanting after the last meditation period, and a period for discussion after that.

We do not have a formal teacher. Some members do have a formal association with a teacher, though; the group itself has been in existence since the late 1980's, and the senior members have decades of experience in Zen practice behind them.

If you have any questions about what we're about, please feel free to contact me at this address. You are welcome to join us, whether you are a long time meditator or a newcomer to practice; we're an informal group and are happy to introduce folks to the Zen tradition. We suggest that newcomers arrive at 8:15, at the end of the first meditation period; at that time, one of the senior members can spend some time with you to briefly explain what we do and how we do it.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Group at [email protected].

If you'e like to see what sitting with us is like, our Sunday morning sessions are live streamed from 7:45 AM till 10:00 AM every Sunday; we ask that you please mute your microphone when you join. Here's the link to our weekly Zoom meeting:
