SMTC Work Trip on Shenandoah Mountain Trail Near Bother Knob
Details
For our December work trip, we’re heading to the Bother Knob region of the Shenandoah Mountain Trail. Hikers have lost the trail or been diverted by blowdowns resulting in some accidental social trails. The work area is a short series of leaf-covered switchbacks that need blazing and some limited sidehill tread restoration similar to what we did on White Oak Draft Trail in September.
We’ll carpool to the foot of Bother Knob and hike in to the work area a little less than 2.5 miles. The hike will involve a 750 foot climb in each direction. The trail mostly follows the ridge at an elevation of 3800-4200 feet with views to both sides.
Our work on this short section of trail will have an immediate and significant impact on trail users as I lost the trail several times while scouting for this trip. No experience necessary, and everybody can work within their own limits.
Due to day length and nature of the access roads, we want to be at the trailhead by 9 AM which will mean an early start for some of you. It takes about 50 minutes to get to the trailhead from Dayton. We’ll figure out carpool arrangements when we get a headcount as we’ll want to take vehicles suitable for the rough access road.
Please contact Gary Flynn to RSVP or ask questions ([email protected]).
