The CHEARS book group invites CHEARS members to come and join them for a bookish chat over lunch at the St James Tavern, Winchester. (Or just grab a drink if you don’t want to do lunch.)

A big thanks to one of our longest serving members, Amanda, whose wonderful art above features some of the books we have read together this year.

If you’ve been thinking about coming to our regular meetings this might be a nice event to come to find out a bit more and meet regular attendees. For this event we are doing things a little differently. Instead of having a set book that we all read, we are inviting participants to say a bit about a book they have read that was interesting, enjoyable or impactful. This is optional, we don’t want any potential new members to feel under pressure to speak, but we hope that we can pick one of these books for our January meeting and we can also use it as an opportunity harvest fresh ideas for book choice topics for 2025.

You can of course attend without having lunch, just add a comment to that effect so I can make our booking accurate. Please do buy a drink at the bar to support the pub. The table will be booked in my name, Karen Brooking.

We warmly welcome new members to the book club. At each regular meeting we go round the table giving everyone who wants to a chance to voice their initial impressions of the book. We then draw on this to discuss some themes or interesting elements in more detail, but there is no pressure on anyone to contribute more than they wish to. The aim is for a relaxed and friendly chat over our coffee. We then put forward ideas for the next month’s book and pick the favourite. There is usually a topic or category, but we will veer off for a suggestion that captures our interest, and we are always open to fresh ideas. We are a friendly bunch, please come and join us.

We normally meet on the 3 rd Saturday of each month in the coffee shop at the Arc in Winchester from 10.30 to 12.
