Details

Let's enjoy a fascinating, relaxing walking together along the Nippori Ridge to beautiful Ueno Park through Tokyo's attractive, old-fashioned Yanaka district, browse the free, Yanaka outdoor antiques fair, visit the superb Asakura Museum of Sculpture, Asakura Home Gardens, see gorgeous temples, discover another side of Ueno Park & more!
🎨
(We've been exploring historic North Tokyo for over 15 years, an area filled with remarkable old temples, lovely homes, quirky shops & amazing monuments which somehow escaped the disastrous wartime bombings in the 1940's, so we have many wonderfully fun places & insights to share with you!)
🔆
The Asakura Museum of Sculpture (also known as the Asakura Choso Museum) is the sprawling, three-storied former residence & studio of sculptor Fumio Asakura (1883-1964)
🌺
The Museum features many of Asakura's superb bronzes & includes his extensive library, other collectibles such as paintings, pottery, plus fine gardens at both ground & roof levels.

🏡
Asakura's impressive library of thousands of books, is housed in the adjoining study, along with curios such as a human skeleton!
😄
Upstairs of the Western-style wing is the Orchid Room, now home to several evocative statues of cats. There is also an attractive roof garden from which to view the whole building, including the Japanese garden below & wonderful statues & gardens topping the roofs!
🐈
(Museum admission, just ¥500, HS students or younger, ¥250!)
Nearby, the friendly Yanaka Antiques Fair will be happening, so we'll stop by there to browse among the treasures before visiting the museum.
🎎🏆👒
Afterwards we'll walk along the ridge through a wonderful vintage part of Tokyo that's full gorgeous temples, unique galleries, beautiful old fashioned houses & historic monuments, until we reach lovely Ueno Park.
🌿🏛⛩
Those that care to can visit one of the wonderful museums Ueno Park there, or we can visit the elegant, Goddess temple in Shinobazu Pond!
