Beaconsfield, Hedgerley & Burnham Beeches – Country Hike
Details
Walk length 12 miles/19km approx. Circular.
A scenic country hike from Beaconsfield to Burnham Beeches via the pretty village of Hedgerley.
Burnham Beeches covers an area of approximately 220 hectares. Many of the trees are extremely old, the oldest, the Druid Oak is estimated to be 700 years old. The majority of the trees being Beeches of which about 450 are ancient pollards, some are over 500 years old. This area is protected as a nature reserve and the roads that cross it are closed off to cars making it ideal for walkers and cyclists.
This woodland has been managed by the City of London Corporation since 1879 that incidentally also manage Hampstead Heath and Epping Forest woodlands. It has a number of historic features including the ramparts of the Seven Ways Plain Iron Age Hillfort, which was also used as a vehicle service Depot for the D-Day landings in 1944.
A number of films based at the nearby nearby Pinewood, Sheperton and Bray studios have used Burham Beeches as locations, such as Goldfinger, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix amongst others.
