What we’re about

What will we do?
We will gather together virtually to dig up the treasures in the word of God and to have honest conversations. Some studies we will go through will be published and designed by the author while others will be collective conversations looking at works from saints over the years such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer, AW Tozer and C.S. Lewis. We will have open conversations about what it means to follow Jesus in this time and how we can align our lives to the truths found in scripture. We will have hard conversations about theodicy- if God is good and all powerful, then why does evil exist in the world?, about whether or not there is more than one path to heaven (Acts 4:12) and about whether hell is a real place (Matthew 25:30). We will talk about the faithfulness, longsuffering and goodness of God as revealed in scripture and in our own lives (if you do not feel like this is your experience with Jesus then even more reason to join!). My hope is that questions will be answered and my hunch is that some will remain as God may intend them, a mystery, until the children of God are joined together with Him.

How will we meet?
We will meet via Zoom- every other Wednesday at 830pm EST starting on November 13th 2024. My plan is to also start a groupme chat so that we can communicate in between our meetings to do life together, pray for one another and have a quick way to send any schedule updates.

First Study:
Our first study will simply be: The anatomy of the Bible! We will discuss the flow of the entire cannon of scripture and talk about some hopefully helpful ways to approach the reading of God's word. My hope is that if you have never cracked open the Bible that you will gain much from this first study. I have a hunch that even if you have been studying scripture for years, you also can gain new insights and inspire the others in the group with the wisdom you have gleaned in the reading of God's word!

Just so that you know my perspective, I will offer a few of my foundational beliefs below:

  • Who is God? I believe in the Triune God of the Bible. I believe in the Father, the son and the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the son of God. He came in the flesh, was crucified on calvary and three days later was resurrected. He defeated death and the grave and has made a way for us to be reconciled with God.
  • The Authority of Scripture: The Bible is the inerrant word for God. Every word is God-breathed and profitible for teaching, correcting and training in righteousness. (2 timothy 3:16-17)
  • The Holy Spirt. I believe that the Lord gave his Holy Spirit to us to teach us all things (John 14:26). While I do believe that the gifts of the spirit are still alive today (1 Corinthians 12:17), I recognize that an unhealthy emphasis can be placed upon them. I think this can and sometimes does lead to man-centered theology.
