City Walk Old Terminal Hobby Airport, 7 miles

Details

Today's walk takes us to the 1940 Air Terminal at Hobby Airport, now a museum to early commercial aviation and once a setting for the comings and goings of Howard Hughes, Bill Hobby, Lyndon Johnson, and all the central figures of the oil boom years of the 1950s. The terminal was also briefly home of the WASPs, the Women's Army Service Pilots, an organization during WWII that trained women pilots for service in the war effort.

The museum has a $5 fee and for that we can stand on the ramp/runway at Hobby Airport, watch the jets land, check out several of their period airplane collection, and see an Argentine fighter jet.

As well we will walk through Garden Villas, an early Houston suburb. Established in 1926, the historic neighborhood featured .7 acre lots, which the developers intended to be a community that would house chicken coops, orchards, and vegetable gardens. We will stroll through its giant pecan trees, a remnant of the 6,000 trees planted by the developer. It feels just like a walk in the country except for the jets overhead landing at Hobby Airport. A good cool weather hike with lots of grass and sun.

Wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water. The heat in Texas is always a concern so let someone know if you are having a hard time. For more information about hiking check out this very useful hiking website: https://www.hatsandmore.org/

Our organizers are not guides nor do we have any special training. We are here to come up with hiking ideas and get the hike started. Take the same precautions you would if hiking alone, including the fitness needed to make long hikes. Then enjoy the hike among friends.
