What we’re about
"Outside of a dog, a book is woman's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read." —Groucho Marx
"In the work of a writer of genius we rediscover our own neglected thoughts." —Emerson
“The person who doesn’t read lives only one life. The reader lives 5,000. Reading is immortality backwards.”
—Umberto Ecco
So, how many lives do you wish to live? I admit it, I am greedy when it comes to living. I want to live far, wide, deep, and beyond. Yet, I'm sure I'm not the only one who gave many a classic book a pass while growing up. Perhaps you recall your teachers trying to persuade you about the literary currency these works hold. Did they mention untold pleasure? (Why did they always neglect to say that?) Anyway, my favorite reason for reading and re-reading the classics is this: "A classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say." (Thank you, Italo Calvino.)
This book club is your chance to sit down and finally read Anna Karenina, Don Quixote, Persuasion, and also those somewhat forgotten classics or recent works of similar resonance. The books can span any time period or place, and our reading list is forever growing and expanding based on your suggestions.
