The second 2024 edition of this popular art- and hostelry-focused afternoon jolly! Welcome to the tiny riverside town of Wivenhoe, four miles out of Colchester and the funkiest place in north Essex! The club Wivenhoe Art Trail Meetup is more a social than a serious walk. Ideal for anyone interested in… enjoying diverse locally-created fine art during a sociable afternoon with an easygoing group, and… not walking too far! It’s a freebie.
The Wivenhoe Art Trail is a biannual public event involving 20+ local artists exhibiting their work in informal and often bijou venues: sheds, gardens, garages and their houses, as well as in the town’s studios and galleries. We meet at 12:00 at Wivenhoe rail station (regular rail services from Colchester, good buses too) before setting off to enjoy the Trail. We walk from venue to venue (see map on Facebook), tho’ may not make it round all of ‘em.
Our arty amble will be nested within an expert-guided tour of some or all of Wivenhoe's six ‘Wonders’ – the finest local social rendezvous, including the Buoy, Greyhound, Railway, Rose, and Horse (...if we get that far). Good options for pub grub along the way if you wish, though: keep up!
An authentic small-scale experience around this so-called ‘artists’ colony’. 1.5 miles walking max., all urban underfoot, but note: steep hills. Bring a brolly and warm clothes.
Plenty to see along the way including the old town, historic houses, independent retail incl. two bookshops, politically-correct locals, and the riverside with views to Rowhedge and the Roman River valley. Wivenhoe was named the best place to live in the East of England by the *Sunday Times* 2024.
