Nathan Hale Cemetery Tour
Details
This early 18th-century cemetery is situated on seven acres on the shore of Lake Wamgumbaug. Headstones date from as early as 1718. Earlier stones may exist but are unreadable due to weathering.
Located at the cemetery entrance is The Captain Nathan Hale Monument - a 45-foot obelisk built in 1846 in honor of Hale, the Revolutionary War hero, who was born in Coventry. It was one of the first war memorials to be built in the United States. His body was never recovered after his execution, but some members of his family, including his sisters and brother, are buried at the cemetery.
Just us for a PRIVATE TOUR, led by Town Historian John Holmy, of this historic cemetery. We'll learn about gravestone carvers, Puritan burial practices, and notable Coventry citizens buried in the cemetery.
